A 2008 study found that Buffalo had the third-highest housing vacancy rate in the nation and it appears that those numbers could climb higher. Over 3,000 Buffalo homeowners and 437 Buffalo business owners will see their Buffalo properties placed on the auction block if they fail to pay back taxes and fees in the coming weeks.

Buffalo Foreclosure Auction
The three-day sale will begin Oct. 26 in the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center and if more than 3,000 properties are up for sale it could be the City’s largest auction to date. This sale includes over 1,500 vacant lots and 1,600 Buffalo properties that were previously offered at prior auctions and did not sold.
Help for Buffalo Home Owners in Trouble
City officials anticipate that the numbers will decrease as people pay the back taxes and fees or have the sales legally stopped. In an effort to help these home owners there will be several sessions to assist Buffalo home owners on Oct. 21, 22 and 23 in the Erie County Court Building at 25 Delaware Ave.
The city will join forces with the Legal Aid Bureau of Buffalo and other local organizations. Senior Erie County Judge Michael L. D’Amico also will be involved in the sessions, which aim to guide property owners through the process of avoiding foreclosure. For more information on obtaining help in avoiding foreclosure, call the city’s tax office at 851-5734.
